The Little Mermaid – Wish

“The Little Mermaid,” visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of the studio’s Oscar®-winning animated musical classic, opens exclusively in theaters nationwide May 26, 2023. “The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Spin VFX

The extremely talented team at SPIN under the guidance of VFX Supervisor Wesley Sewell, entered the madness of the multiverses and brought to life some breathtaking environments and shots. The complexity of the stellar vortex required a visual balancing act. Story-wise, we were challenged with bringing all of these elements to a crescendo to underline the imminent danger our characters were in. We had highly detailed foreground asset destruction of the wall and pillars, choreographed brick destruction, black strands of vortex energy, and multiple layers of debris; all of which had to blend into the motion of our hero vortex setup, which in itself was made up of multiple high-resolution volume sims. Getting all of these elements to play together in a cohesive way without being visually overwhelming or introducing continuity issues required extensive planning and flexible effects setups that could be art-directed with quick turnaround times.

The second challenge was creating the “Multiverse Map” simulations. Doctor Strange summons this map from an ancient book which creates a sprawling three-dimensional visage around him. Each “orb” represents a time/place/universe that Doctor Strange can examine. The orb look was realized with multiple levels of procedural volumes, simulated volumes and particles, and internal lights to cast volumetric rays. ID passes were also critical to allow our compositing team to tune the renders per orb and per component to achieve the desired look. The “orbs” that we created were so successful that Marvel shared them with all the other VFX vendors for a beautiful continuity throughout the film.

She-Hulk – Attorney at Law – Digital Domain

To realize 43 minutes of screen time for Marvel Studios’ latest superhero, She-Hulk, Digital Domain VFX Supervisor Jan Philip Cramer and his outstanding team of artists sought inspiration in the technology used to create everyone’s favorite villain, Thanos. Building on that same technology, the Digital Domain team successfully transformed the 5’4” Tatiana Maslany into a 6’7” green giant, without sacrificing the nuance of the Emmy-winner’s performance.

In addition to utilizing the studios proprietary tools, Masquerade 2.0 and Charlatan, to bring She-Hulk to life, DD also worked on several other visual effects sequences throughout the series while introducing new systems. The team developed a ShapeWear system that allowed the superhero’s attire to accurately adjust to the character model, while subtly and realistically augmenting the muscles to match. This can be seen throughout the series and most notably in the dance scene with Megan the Stallion.

The team also created CG droid K.E.V.I.N., which was meant as an homage to Marvel Studios mastermind, Kevin Feige, and much more! In total, Digital Domain contributed nearly 1,000 VFX shots to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, including 660 shots of She-Hulk alone

Ms. Marvel – Digital Domain

For the Marvel Studios hit series “Ms. Marvel,” Digital Domain VFX Supervisor Aladino Debert and his talented team of artists successfully brought the comic book hero and her superpowers to life. Building on the new origins, artists at Digital Domain designed a unique look for Kamala Khan’s powers featuring a blue-ish purple crystalline manifestation that radiated energy, highlighted by an internal luminescence, created in Houdini.

The team also created several environments including the crowded train station set on the eve of the infamous Partition of India, creating several digital trains, crowds in period-appropriate clothing, and smoke to bring it all to life. Additionally, Aladino and his team were responsible for the fight sequence in the final episode. For this sequence, the team developed the look for Kamran’s damaging powers, Ms. Marvel’s giant, hard-light hands, digital debris, partial digidoubles of Kamran and Ms. Marvel, and more.

The Digital Domain team was also responsible for the iconic closing scene, which appeared in the series’ poster where Ms. Marvel sits on a lamppost and looks out over the city as her hair blows in the wind.

How Disney’s Animated Hair Became So Realistic, From ‘Tangled’ To ‘Encanto’ – Insider

The complex helical curl shape seen on Mirabel in “Encanto” is something you haven’t seen in an animated Disney movie until now. The blockbuster musical was Disney’s first animated movie to feature every category of hair texture, from 1A to 4C. Getting there took a decade of building the animation, simulation, shading, and grooming tools to represent the full range of hair types, colors, and styles.

We spoke with four members of the “Encanto” team to find out how they did it: Character Look Development Supervisor Michelle Lee Robinson, Consultant for Afro Colombian Representation Edna Liliana Valencia Murillo, Associate Technical Supervisor Nadim Sinno, and Character Look Artist Jose “Weecho” Velasquez.

They help trace the evolution of Disney’s 3D-animated hair over the past ten years, from Rapunzel’s 70-foot long mane in “Tangled” and Elsa and Anna’s braids in “Frozen” to the curly-wavy hair in “Moana” and diversity of textures in “Encanto.”

Cruella – MPC Film

Collider got an exclusive video from MPC Film that breaks down the VFX work of Cruella, Disney’s successful live-action prequel starring Emma Stone as the titular villain. The new video shows some of the film’s most iconic scenes, explaining how the VFX team used digital models to create Cruella’s stunning visuals.

The new video strips down several shots from Cruella, revealing how the VFX team modified color and light to give the movie its unique tone. More impressive is the addition of digital models to represent Cruella’s dogs and even buildings. The VFX team also did an amazing job removing elements from the frame, with a couple of bird-eye view shots from London showing how buildings were erased for the movie. Since Cruella is a prequel set in the 1970s, the VFX had to transform the whole city to avoid anachronism.

In addition to the video, Production VFX Supervisor Max Wood also explained how some scenes were put together, such as the ball scene where Cruella first shows up as her villainous persona. Cruella burns a paper cloak she’s wearing in the scene, only to reveal a stunning dress hiding underneath. Although the scene only has three shots, the VFX team had a lot of work to put the flaming cloak together. As Wood tells us:

“The three shots were first filmed with Cruella, Emma Stone, wearing the red dress. Then, after a hair, make-up, and costume change, she repeated the action in the white hooded cape for all three shots. We knew that the cape would be CG but these takes gave the Visual Effects team a perfect reference of how the cape would move and how the shiny fabric would look under the on-set lighting.”

Filming Stone with different costumes allowed the VFX team to gather references to simulate the movement of the paper cloak Cruella uses. However, lighting it on fire and making it look realistic was a challenge of its own. As Wood explains the process:

“As it [the cloak] ignites, not only do the small pieces break away, but there is an overall rising effect of the cape to simulate what happens to real flash paper when ignited. Once the cape began to move correctly, flames and smoke were simulated, and a lighting effect was added to the surrounding environment and party-goers to integrate the effect.”

Cruella’s cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry, Emma Thompson, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mark Strong, John McCrea, and Kayvan Novak. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) directs from a screenplay written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, with story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. Due to the movie’s success, Disney already greenlit a sequel with Stone set to return as the villain.

Jungle Cruise – Weta Digital

Weta Digital’s contribution to Disney’s Jungle Cruise focused primarily on creating environments—including hundreds of kilometres of CG Amazon River, with mist, waterfalls and rapids—as well as the creatures that populate the jungle. We created and hand-animated Frank’s ever-loyal, and fully CG, pet jaguar Proxima, and crafted motion vignettes for the abundance of birds, bugs and monkeys that call the jungle home.

How Pixar Makes Animated Clothes Look Real

In Pixar’s “Onward,” two elf brothers turn their late father into a pair of pants. Their dad had the most technically complex costume Pixar’s ever done (per their production notes). The challenge for the costume animation team was to make something that was appealing, funny, physically plausible, & look like a person at first glance — but ultimately behave like an actual lump of cloth. We focus on Dad’s costume, since he’s at the center of the story & his clothing posed a particular challenge to Pixar’s character tailoring artists. It will be interesting to show how much animation/simulation work & creativity goes into a single outfit for a Pixar character.
